2023.06.15 Decanter Centrifuge

This drilling fluids solids control system contains following equipment:

1. Double deck shale shaker GNSZ706J. Shale shaker always shows up in the first stage to remove the largest share of drilling cuttings. Comparing with a single deck shale shaker, a double deck shale shaker can increase the treating capacity by 30%. The drilling mud falls onto the upper deck of shaker with comparably coarse screens for the 1st separation, then onto the lower deck with finer screens for the 2nd separation.

2. Vacuum degasser GNZCQ270. A degasser is used to remove the gas bubbles from the drilling mud. It can help to protect the pumps after the vacuum degasser. GN Vacuum degasser has a special design which doesn’t need an additional feeding pump. It is always located after the shale shaker and before the desander and it can also plays the role as a large mud agitator.

3. Desander GNWSJ-2S. This is a desanding unit without underflow shaker. It is fed by a centrifugal pump and is used to remove particles larger than 40 microns.

4. Desilter GNZS752-12N. Desilter cyclones are used to remove particles larger than 20 microns, and it is also fed by a centrifugal pump. This one is equipped with an underflow shale shaker with 2 pieces of screens.

5. Drilling fluids decanter centrifuge GNLW363D. Decanter centrifuge is used to remove the fine particles from the drilling liquid, ranging from 2 to 5 microns.

6. Mud tank system including centrifugal pumps and mixing hopper.

GNLW554-VFD Decanter Centrifuge for Overseas Glucose Syrup Clarification Project

GN Separation is a brand under GN Solids Control, which is a well-known brand for providing solutions for separation and conveying, and also an equipment manufacturer for separation and conveying. Solids Control system is an essential part of a drilling rig system, which is used for remove the drilling cuttings from the expensive drilling mud. Functions of each equipment: in fact, the solids control system are used for removing the drilling cuttings from the mud in a physical way, which means, each step of separation is based on the drilling cuttings’ particle sizes. The shale shakers are used to remove the most particles larger than 100 microns. Desander and desilter are working with centrifugal force generated by the cyclones’ structure, and their cuttings points are respectively 40 and 20 microns. The middle speed centrifuge are used for removal of particles from 5 to 7 microns, which here means barite recovery. And the high speed centrifuges are used for removing particles from 2 to 5 microns, extra fine ones.

Desander Desilter and Degasser for China Drilling Company

In a complete solids control system, there are following equipment involved:

Shale shakers, desanders, desilters, degasser, decanter centrifuges and pumps. In a recent project, a China drilling company has just purchased from GN Solids Control following equipment for a solids control system:

1. Desander GNZJ752J-1S. The desander cones are located after the shale shaker, which is used to remove particles above 40 microns. For this desander, there is a drying shaker with 2 pieces of shaker screens and a screen size of 1.35 square meter. Normally for weighted mud there should be a desander or desilter with underflow shaker. Here it is a one desander model with a 10 inch diameter desander cone.

2. Desilter GNZJ752J-8N. This desilte is located after the desander. It is called desilter cause it is used to remove particles larger than 20 microns which are mostly sized as silt. Same as the desander, it has an underflow shaker, too. Both the desander and desilter are fed by centrifugal pumps.

3. Vacuum degasser GNZCQ270B. Vacuum degassers are located after the shale shaker while before the cyclones. GN Vacuum degasser has no need of a large power. Instead, it can be regarded as a large agitator. GN Solids Control has 2 models of vacuum degasser available and the GNZCQ270 is the smaller one. Besides the vacuum degasser, GN Solids Control also has centrifugal degasser available.

Drilling Mud Solids Control Centrifuges for Africa Clients

Africa is a wide and beautiful land with rich resources including the gold mines and black gold mines, the crude oil. What functions could a decanter centrifuge to serve in a solids control or waste management system for oil and gas drilling?

Solids Control Centrifuge

1. Decanter centrifuge are always located as the 4th stage for solids control, after the desilter cones. Before the centrifuge, there are shale shakers, desander cones and desilter cones, each has a smaller cutting point than last stage. A middle speed decanter centrifuge is always used for recover the expensive barite in the drilling mud.

2. If there is a 5th stage for separation as in many high configuration solids control systems, it should be a high speed centrifuge, too. This centrifuge is used to separate out the cuttings from 2 to 5 microns in the drilling mud.

3. As in many countries in Africa, where there is a drilling rig, along with the solids control system, there should be a drilling cuttings waste management system containing s vertical cuttings dryer and a decanter centrifuge. The vertical cuttings dryer is used to remove the oil on cuttings and the high speed centrifuge is used to remove the small particles in the recovered mud from vertical cuttings dryer.

Liquid Mud Plant Provided by GN Solids Control

Liquid mud plant is also called LMP, which is used for preparing, storage and treatment of the drilling mud. In a complete liquid mud plant, there should be 3 mainly drilling mud tanks for different purpose:

1. Mixing Tank.

Mixing tanks are always cuboid shaped mud tanks equipped by mud mixing hoppers. Those hoppers are always Venturi hoppers linked to centrifugal pumps. When pump is sucking mud from one compartment to another, and when mud is passing the Venturi hopper, there will be a sucking force to suck in the chemicals from the hopper.
Mixing tanks have mud agitators and mud guns, too, for stirring up the mud in order to prevent settling down. Meanwhile, there are also pumps for transferring the prepared mud from mixing tank to others.

2. Treating tanks.

When used mud is delivered to the liquid mud plant, the dirty mud shall be treated by separation equipment in order to remove the particles and to be returned to the storage tanks. The separation equipment are mainly shale shakers and decanter centrifuges, and when there are extra fine particles, there should be chemical dosing for flocculating.

3. Storage tanks.

Storage tanks are not complicated in pipelines and always using single guardrails. There are no divided compartments inside a storage tank and the most commonly used equipment are mud agitators and mud guns. Both mud agitators and mud guns are used continuously for stirring the drilling mud from being settled down to the tank bottom. Clean mud will be safely storage in those tanks.

1500GPM Drilling Mud Cleaner for Drilling Company in China

In a drilling rig solids control system, there are at least 3 steps for separation, the shale shaker, the desander cones and desilter cones. And there is a machine as a combination of desander and desilter, which is called a mud cleaner. Comparing with such designs as a single desander plus a single desilter, the mud cleaner occupies a much smaller footprint. Meanwhile, by sharing one drying shaker, the mud cleaner is less power consumable.

Each mud cleaner of this model can serve a 1500GPM treating capacity, which is suitable for a large horsepower drilling rig. Main Specifications of GNZJ594F-3S16N:

1. GNZJ594F: it is a shaker model among GN shale shakers, it is equipped by 2 vibrating motors each of 1.72kw power. The shaker is equipped by 4 pieces of shaker screens, with a total screen area of 2.73 square meters. The shaker deck is quite strong and uses good sealing in order to prevent leakage. The shaker deck angle can be adjusted during operating for achieving a good performance.

2. Shaker screens. The shaker screens on the shale shakers are made by GN Solids Control, too. GN shale shakers are fully in compliance with API RP 13C, with same screen dimension, the non-blanked area and conductance are both comparably larger.

3. Desander and desilters. GN chooses polyurethane desander and desilter cyclones for longer service life. Desander cyclones are of 10 inch diameter for the 40 microns cutting point, and desilter cyclones are of 4 inch diameter for 20 micron cutting point.

GNMS-1500D Mud Recycling System Deliver to Clients in Asia

Normally, GN Solids Control recommends 4 stage separation systems for TBM or pipe jacking projects for a thorough treatment of drilling mud. In some cases, based on clients’ customized requests, GN Solids Control can also make 2 or 3 stages separation units in a compact design. 1. GNMS-1500D Mud Recycling System is designed and manufactured according to the needs and requirements from customer, which is appropriate for mud treating & recycling in mining industry, piling works, HDD(horizontal directional drilling) and so on.

2. The treatment capacity of this system is up to 360m³/h. This system includes 2 stages of solids control and separation. The first-stage separation is the shale shaker part of double deck shale shaker & desander.

How to Operate on a Vacuum Pump to Its Best

As is known to all, a vacuum pump is a powerful pump which is suitable for different applications. Because it can transfer material with large particles or large solids content, it is also called a solids pump. It is fully air-driven by connecting to an air compressor. The working principal is to suck in the material with the negative force and push the material out with a positive force.

If it is operated in correct method, it can reach a quite ideal performance. Here are some tips:

1. Suitable air supply for the vacuum pump:

There are 2 requests to meet for the air compressor: pressure between 0.6~0.8 Mpa, and a large enough air volume.
In some cases, although the air compressor can produce an air pressure of 0.6 Mpa or above, during operation, reading on pressure guage is only 0.4 or 0.5Mpa.
This problem could be solved by reducing the air hose length from air compressor to the pump, or using a larger diameter air hose.
Another option is an air container. Since the ideal operating air pressure should be stable around some value between 0.6 to 0.8 MPa. In some cases, when the air supply from an air compressor is not stable, you can use an air container matching to the air compressor. It is located in between the compressor and pump.

2. Time setting for loading and discharging:
For both loading and discharging, there is a time range from 0 to 30 seconds. This time setting can be adjusted during operating, which depends on many factors including material character, distance, pipe diameter and etc.
For example, if the sucking time is set at 25 seconds, and when pump is sucking, at first the material goes quite quickly, then it slows down gradually.
When the material moving nearly stops, the pump is almost full. You read the time and you can set the sucking time accordingly.
During discharging, make sure the material is fully pushed out from the discharging hose. Don’t leave heaps of material to stop at half. In that case, it will hinder the later sucking and discharging.
