CIPPE 2024 was successfully held in this spring in Beijing as scheduled. GN Solids Control has been attending this exhibition for 15 years ever since GN was established. For this exhibition, GN brought to the booth following equipment:
1.Middle sized decanter centrifuge GNLW 363. Among all GN decanter centrifuges, this one is a middle sized one, but it is also the most popular model in oil and gas industry, especially for the waste management treatment for drilling cuttings.

Several Packages of Vertical Cuttings Dryer System for Overseas Client

Oil field equipment and systems are always one of the core products of GN Solids Control, which still occupies more than one third of GN Group’s products each year. 1. Vertical Cuttings Dryer. Comparing with shale shakers and decanter centrifuges, the vertical cuttings dryers are not so commonly known equipment, but in fact, in drilling cuttings waste management systems, they are quite practical, especially in case of oil based mud. GN’s first set of vertical cuttings dryer was designed and made into reality in year 2014, and it was soon recognized by clients and became popular all over the world. 2. Decanter Centrifuge. After the vertical cuttings dryer, there will be a decanter centrifuge to treat the fluids discharged from the vertical cuttings dryer, because there are still some fine particles in the drilling fluids at this stage. A high speed decanter centrifuge is efficient to remove the particles from 2 to 5 microns thoroughly. After the decanter centrifuge, the drilling fluids would be clean enough to be returned to the drilling procedure.

2023.06.15 Decanter Centrifuge

This drilling fluids solids control system contains following equipment:

1. Double deck shale shaker GNSZ706J. Shale shaker always shows up in the first stage to remove the largest share of drilling cuttings. Comparing with a single deck shale shaker, a double deck shale shaker can increase the treating capacity by 30%. The drilling mud falls onto the upper deck of shaker with comparably coarse screens for the 1st separation, then onto the lower deck with finer screens for the 2nd separation.

2. Vacuum degasser GNZCQ270. A degasser is used to remove the gas bubbles from the drilling mud. It can help to protect the pumps after the vacuum degasser. GN Vacuum degasser has a special design which doesn’t need an additional feeding pump. It is always located after the shale shaker and before the desander and it can also plays the role as a large mud agitator.

3. Desander GNWSJ-2S. This is a desanding unit without underflow shaker. It is fed by a centrifugal pump and is used to remove particles larger than 40 microns.

4. Desilter GNZS752-12N. Desilter cyclones are used to remove particles larger than 20 microns, and it is also fed by a centrifugal pump. This one is equipped with an underflow shale shaker with 2 pieces of screens.

5. Drilling fluids decanter centrifuge GNLW363D. Decanter centrifuge is used to remove the fine particles from the drilling liquid, ranging from 2 to 5 microns.

6. Mud tank system including centrifugal pumps and mixing hopper.

Decanter centrifuges are widely used in various drilling industries for the separation of solids and liquid, including the oil and gas drilling, geothermal drilling, diamond drilling and pipe jacking. Based on different requested drilling capacities, there are different sizes of centrifuges for option. 1. GNLW223 Decanter centrifuge. It is also called a baby centrifuge among all GN centrifuge models. The length diameter ratio is 3, which is a typical value for drilling mud separation works. The largest RPM it can reach is 4500RPM, and it can efficiently remove all the particles from 2 to 5 microns.

2. Applications of GNLW223 decanter centrifuge. GNLW 223 decanter centrifuge is small but popular. It is widely used among GN clients in diamond drilling projects, geothermal well’s drilling, HDD projects and animal waste treatment. It is a compact model especially in North America and Europe.

3. Special design for this batch of GNLW223 decanter centrifuges. When the centrifuge is put into use, it should be put on a certain height in order to discharge the liquid and solids. That’s why there is always a skid, sometimes telescopic, under the decanter centrifuge. For this batch of decanter centrifuges, GN designed a small tank below the centrifuge, together with half height as the standing frame. The small tank could be a catch tank for holding the discharge liquid. While transportation the solids discharge chute can be folded between the tank and centrifuge. The tank is open top for easy observation and to clean. Near to the bottom, there is a port as drain port.

How to Choose a Suitable Solution for a Drilling Waste Management System

According to the environment protection laws and regulations in many countries, the drilling waste management system is mandatory for a drilling rig’s solids control system. A complete drilling waste management system includes 2 systems, one is to treat the drilling cuttings discharged by the solids control shale shakers, which is used for reduce the cuttings for a safe discharge, and also for recovery of the drilling fluids. The other is drilling fluids waste management, which is used to remove the extra particles in the drilling fluids after a long time recycling in a solids control system.

2022.08.15 Solids Control Centrifuge

1. Drilling cuttings waste management system. In a word, this system’s first mission is to minimize the cuttings to be discharged. Based on different mud type, the first separation equipment is different.

1.1. For oil based mud, which is used in most of drilling fields, a vertical cuttings dryer is more efficient. A vertical cuttings dryer is a high speed rotating machine which uses the centrifugal force to splash the liquid to through a mesh while the same mesh is used to block the cuttings. GNCD930 series vertical cuttings dryers can reduce the oil on cutting to below 5%.

1.2. For water based mud, a high G drying shaker is a better choice. It is similar as a shale shaker. And the main differences from a solids control shale shaker are: a high G shaker has a larger G force and the feeding of a high G shale shaker is like a hopper.

2. The second step for separation, for both the OBM cuttings and WBM cuttings is always a high speed decanter centrifuge, which is used to remove the finer solids particles in the liquid after the first equipment’s work. Unless a solids control centrifuge, this centrifuge for drilling waste management is always equipped by a VFD control panel, which is more flexible for variable mud condition.

Drilling Mud Solids Control Centrifuges for Africa Clients

Africa is a wide and beautiful land with rich resources including the gold mines and black gold mines, the crude oil. 1. Decanter centrifuge are always located as the 4th stage for solids control, after the desilter cones. Before the centrifuge, there are shale shakers, desander cones and desilter cones, each has a smaller cutting point than last stage. A middle speed decanter centrifuge is always used for recover the expensive barite in the drilling mud.

2. If there is a 5th stage for separation as in many high configuration solids control systems, it should be a high speed centrifuge, too. This centrifuge is used to separate out the cuttings from 2 to 5 microns in the drilling mud.

3. As in many countries in Africa, where there is a drilling rig, along with the solids control system, there should be a drilling cuttings waste management system containing s vertical cuttings dryer and a decanter centrifuge. The vertical cuttings dryer is used to remove the oil on cuttings and the high speed centrifuge is used to remove the small particles in the recovered mud from vertical cuttings dryer.

Two Sets HDD Mud Cleaning System for SINOPEC

HDD is a quite common way for pipeline works in cities or for pipelines across the rivers or so. This word is short for horizontal directional drilling. Just as other drilling, the drilling mud is to be used for HDD and the drilling mud should be well treated and prepared for reuse. A complete mud cleaning system for HDD always includes following steps for separation:

1. Shale shaker. In many mud cleaning systems or so called solids control systems, the shale shaker is always the first step for separation. It is used to remove most of particles and also the largest particles. In those 2 systems GN recently made for SINOPEC, the shale shakers are GNZS703F. This shaker model is quite popular in HDD projects and also used for oil and gas solids control systems. It has a screen area of 2.63 square meters provided by 3 pieces of shaker screens each sized 1250*700mm.
2. Mud cleaner. In fact, in an HDD mud cleaning system, there are always desander cones and desilter cones. Desander cones are of 10 inch diameter, which is used for removal of particles larger than 40 microns. And the desilter cones are of 4 inch diameter for removal of particles larger than 20 microns. A mud cleaner is a combination of desander cones and desilter cones, with a shared underflow shaker for drying.
3. A mud mixing hopper is a must for a HDD mud cleaning system, which is used for adding the loss components into the recycled drilling mud in order to prepare the drilling mud for the future drilling. A mud mixing hopper has a hopper and a centrifugal pump, the hopper can be located together with pump by the mud tank, or on tank top with the centrifugal pump on tank bottom.
4. A decanter centrifuge, which is not a must but quite efficient in high configuration systems. A middle speed centrifuge like GNLW452D is used to remove particles from 5 to 7 microns. And a high speed centrifuge is used to remove particles from 2 to 5 microns.

Equipment Used for Feeding and Discharging for Decanter Centrifuges

Decanter centrifuges are quite important and efficient equipment used for separation of liquid and solids only second to the shale shakers. By the high G force generated by the high speed rotating of centrifuge bowl, the liquid will be splashed and the solids phase is to be pushed out. For achieving a satisfactory separating result, we have to make sure there are suitable equipment for feeding the decanter centrifuge and some other facilities for discharge.
Decanter centrifuges request for stable feeding, so some pulse pumps are not suitable for feeding the centrifuges. The pump shall provide stable feeding capacities. And it would be better if the feeing volume can be adjusted as per the centrifuge speed.

Normally, based on rich experience as a decanter centrifuge manufacturer, GN Solids Control normally suggest those two pumps for centrifuge feeding as below:

1. Screw pump, which is a kind of Mono pump. Inside the screw pump there are one stator and one rotor and the comparative move between them provides stable feeding volume for the centrifuge. GN VFD centrifuges’ control panels can include a control panel for the centrifuge feeding pump.

2. Submersible slurry pump is also used for centrifuge feeding purpose, mostly for constant speed centrifuges, especially when the centrifuge is located on a tank and when the tank’s space is limited.

For centrifuge discharge, normally the liquid phase after separation will flow directly to its containers with a level difference.
