About GN Solids Control

1. The pump is fully air driven. Yes, exactly, cause the solids pumps are really designed as a vacuum cleaner, and it has another name, which is a vacuum pump. It is called a vacuum pump because it is driven by air and helped by an air compressor. The air compressor generated a gas force to the pump and the pump uses travel valves, delay valves and some other parts to suck and push the materials in and out by using the compressed air. Instead, a vacuum pump itself has no need for electricity.

2. Features of vacuum pumps. The air force is high, so the pump is quite powerful. For example, the largest vacuum pump is GNSP-40B among GN vacuum solids pumps and it can suck materials from 500 meters far and discharge to up to 1000 meters away. Even the half sized GNSP 20B can discharge the material to 500 meters distance.

3. Special functions for a mini vacuum pump. Comparing with a large vacuum pump, the mini pump is more compact in structure and equipped by some wheels for easy movement. With a handle, it can be dragged from here to there, just like when you are using a vacuum cleaner at home. GN provides 3 types of inlets for the vacuum pump to make it suitable for different materials.

How to Choose a Suitable Solution for a Drilling Waste Management System

According to the environment protection laws and regulations in many countries, the drilling waste management system is mandatory for a drilling rig’s solids control system. A complete drilling waste management system includes 2 systems, one is to treat the drilling cuttings discharged by the solids control shale shakers, which is used for reduce the cuttings for a safe discharge, and also for recovery of the drilling fluids. The other is drilling fluids waste management, which is used to remove the extra particles in the drilling fluids after a long time recycling in a solids control system.

2022.08.15 Solids Control Centrifuge

1. Drilling cuttings waste management system. In a word, this system’s first mission is to minimize the cuttings to be discharged. Based on different mud type, the first separation equipment is different.

1.1. For oil based mud, which is used in most of drilling fields, a vertical cuttings dryer is more efficient. A vertical cuttings dryer is a high speed rotating machine which uses the centrifugal force to splash the liquid to through a mesh while the same mesh is used to block the cuttings. GNCD930 series vertical cuttings dryers can reduce the oil on cutting to below 5%.

1.2. For water based mud, a high G drying shaker is a better choice. It is similar as a shale shaker. And the main differences from a solids control shale shaker are: a high G shaker has a larger G force and the feeding of a high G shale shaker is like a hopper.

2. The second step for separation, for both the OBM cuttings and WBM cuttings is always a high speed decanter centrifuge, which is used to remove the finer solids particles in the liquid after the first equipment’s work. Unless a solids control centrifuge, this centrifuge for drilling waste management is always equipped by a VFD control panel, which is more flexible for variable mud condition.

Drilling Mud Solids Control Centrifuges for Africa Clients

Africa is a wide and beautiful land with rich resources including the gold mines and black gold mines, the crude oil. During exploration of the crude oil, the environment protection should be fully taken into consideration, for example, in the drilling mud, there are drilling cuttings to be removed and chemicals to be safely discharged. In this case, an efficient solution for solids control system is quite important. In all countries, the solids control system and drilling waste management system are legally requested.

What functions could a decanter centrifuge to serve in a solids control or waste management system for oil and gas drilling?

Solids Control Centrifuge

1. Decanter centrifuge are always located as the 4th stage for solids control, after the desilter cones. Before the centrifuge, there are shale shakers, desander cones and desilter cones, each has a smaller cutting point than last stage. A middle speed decanter centrifuge is always used for recover the expensive barite in the drilling mud.

2. If there is a 5th stage for separation as in many high configuration solids control systems, it should be a high speed centrifuge, too. This centrifuge is used to separate out the cuttings from 2 to 5 microns in the drilling mud.

3. As in many countries in Africa, where there is a drilling rig, along with the solids control system, there should be a drilling cuttings waste management system containing s vertical cuttings dryer and a decanter centrifuge. The vertical cuttings dryer is used to remove the oil on cuttings and the high speed centrifuge is used to remove the small particles in the recovered mud from vertical cuttings dryer.

Two Sets HDD Mud Cleaning System for SINOPEC

HDD is a quite common way for pipeline works in cities or for pipelines across the rivers or so. This word is short for horizontal directional drilling. Just as other drilling, the drilling mud is to be used for HDD and the drilling mud should be well treated and prepared for reuse. A complete mud cleaning system for HDD always includes following steps for separation:

1. Shale shaker. In many mud cleaning systems or so called solids control systems, the shale shaker is always the first step for separation. It is used to remove most of particles and also the largest particles. In those 2 systems GN recently made for SINOPEC, the shale shakers are GNZS703F. This shaker model is quite popular in HDD projects and also used for oil and gas solids control systems. It has a screen area of 2.63 square meters provided by 3 pieces of shaker screens each sized 1250*700mm.
2. Mud cleaner. In fact, in an HDD mud cleaning system, there are always desander cones and desilter cones. Desander cones are of 10 inch diameter, which is used for removal of particles larger than 40 microns. And the desilter cones are of 4 inch diameter for removal of particles larger than 20 microns. A mud cleaner is a combination of desander cones and desilter cones, with a shared underflow shaker for drying.
3. A mud mixing hopper is a must for a HDD mud cleaning system, which is used for adding the loss components into the recycled drilling mud in order to prepare the drilling mud for the future drilling. A mud mixing hopper has a hopper and a centrifugal pump, the hopper can be located together with pump by the mud tank, or on tank top with the centrifugal pump on tank bottom.
4. A decanter centrifuge, which is not a must but quite efficient in high configuration systems. A middle speed centrifuge like GNLW452D is used to remove particles from 5 to 7 microns. And a high speed centrifuge is used to remove particles from 2 to 5 microns.

Oil Based Mud Cuttings Dryer and Centrifuge for Overseas Client

If you are familiar with oil service industry, you must know about drilling waste management systems, which is mainly about 3 kinds of treatments: drilling cuttings treatment, drilling fluids treatment and oily sludge treatment. Among which the drilling cuttings treatment was most commonly requested by laws and regulations.

2022.07.14 Drilling Cuttings Dryer

GN Solids Control is a professional solution provider for above mentioned 3 applications, and recently, GN Solids Control just finished the delivery of a drilling cuttings waste management system including 2 decanter centrifuges and 1 vertical cuttings dryer. Normally, for OBM or SBM’s drilling waste management, there should be a vertical cuttings dryer. In fact, the vertical cuttings dryer is specially designed for the OBM’s drilling cuttings, which can reduce the OOC to 5%. After the vertical cuttings dryer, the liquid phase still contains some fine particles. Those particles could be removed by a high speed decanter centrifuge before being returned to the clean mud tank.

In this system there are following features:

  1. A GNCD930 vertical cuttings dryer is located in a container which is easy to be transported by land or by sea. Meanwhile, a well isolated container can keep the vertical cuttings dryer to operate in a comparably warmer condition during winter.
  2. There are 2 sets of decanter centrifuges in this system, one for solids control, the other for the OBM drilling cuttings. Traditionally, there are 4 steps solids control in a solids control system, the shale shaker, desander and desilter cones, then the centrifuge. Nowadays, more and more clients are choosing decanter centrifuge to replace the cyclones and put them directly after the shale shaker (sometimes 2 decanter centrifuges are used for solids control, a middle speed one plus a high speed one, although in this project the client uses 1 set for solids control only). And the 2nd set of centrifuge is used after the GNCD930 for drilling fluids treatment.

Dual Motion Shale Shaker for Offshore Drilling Company

When talking about oil and gas drilling, there is one type of equipment we can never by-pass, which is shale shaker. Shale shaker is located at the first place of a complete solids control system. GN Solids Control has just finished the manufacturing for some dual motion shale shakers for an offshore drilling company.

2022.07.27 Shale Shaker

1. Dual motional shakers. According to the motional type of the shale shaker, the shale shaker could be divided into several types: linear motional, oval motional and dual motional one, as the model GN just provided to this offshore drilling company. This motional means the motion route of the drilling cuttings on the shaker screens during operation, which determines the time the cuttings spend on screens and the positions they fall on screens. GN Solids Control has also linear motional shakers available.

2. GN shaker models. GN Solids Control has various shaker models for option based on different treating capacities, including mini shaker with 2 shaker screens GNZS752F shale shaker, the normal shakers with 3 or 4 pieces of screens, GNZS703F and GNZS594F, with screen size as 2.63m2 and 2,73m2, and double deck shale shaker GNZS706F which can use 2 different screen API’s, the coarse ones on top deck while fine ones on bottom deck in order to achieve a larger capacity.

3. GN High-G shakers. Besides the normal shale shakers used for drilling rig solids control purpose, GN Solids Control also has High G drying shakers available. The high-G drying shakers are used for treating the drilling cuttings collected from the shakers’ discharged material, mainly for water based mud. For the high-G models, GN has models based on GNZS703 and GNZS594, and the vibrating G force can reach upto 8.5. Solids Removal Unit for Diamond Drilling to Chile

Such as all other drillings, the diamond drilling is also in need of drilling mud treatment. Because of the project features that the diamond drilling jobsites are always located in different places, and the drilling machine is not so big, the compact equipment is more preferred than large ones.

Also, based on the particle size and requested separation results, the decanter centrifuges are always quite popular among end users, that’s why for the diamond drilling projects, the most popular equipment GN provided to clients are GNLW223 Decanter centrifuges. Each year, GN make and sell 30+ sets of this centrifuge model to different countries in the world.

2022.06.14 Diamond Drilling Mud System

Besides the decanter centrifuge, some clients prefers a complete mud system with several functions including coarse separation, fine separation and mud preparation by using a mud mixing hopper. Just recently, GN Solids Control has provided to a client in Chile with a complete mud recycling system for diamond drilling, including following equipment:

1. Shale shaker or first step separation. Considering the compact structure and requested treating capacity, for this system GN chooses the GNZS752F shale shaker as the first step separation, with a 1.35m2 screen area with 2 pieces of composite frame screens.

2. Decanter centrifuge. Here a high speed decanter centrifuge is used for separating out the particles from 2 to 5 microns.

3. Mud mixing hopper, which is used for adding new chemicals or lost components into the drilling mud. The mud mixing hopper and decanter centrifuge can share one pump, alternatively serving for feeding centrifuge or mixing purpose.

On client’s request, GN also matches a generator for the whole system on the same skid of the mud tank.

GNOST-15B Oil Sludge Treatment Package Equipment for Beijing Client

Oily sludge treatment systems are quite important solutions for the oil and gas industry, especially for the refineries. A professional solution can help the contractor to separate the oil, water and solids, and finally reuse the water, recycle the oil and reduce the solids discharge’s volume and damage for the environment.

2022.06.21 Oil Sludge Treatment Equipment

Based on the requested treating capacity, GN Solids Control designed 3 models of OST systems GNOST-01, GNOST-05 and GNOST-15. All three models are combined by 3 steps for separation, with only difference as each equipment capacities. The treating procedures are functioned by following steps:

1. Shale shaker. Shale shaker can take out the most particles in the sludge by using suitable screen mesh sizes. In case the sludge has a high viscosity or the oil is wrapping on the solids so tightly, we can use pre-heating facilities and pre mixing for the sludge to break the linkage between the oil and solids for easier separation.

2. Decanter centrifuge. Decanter centrifuge is used to remove the particles from 2 to 5 microns with a high rotating speed, comparing with other equipment to separation, the decanter centrifuge is quite efficient and the separation is thoroughly.

3. After the decanter centrifuge, there should be a disc stack or a three phase centrifuge for the separation of oil, water and solids. Here before entering this step, the solids particles become no quite a lot. The main function is to separate the water from oil.

Here, for this client in Beijing, GN Solids Control provided a system of GNOST-15, including a GNZS594F shale shaker, a big bowl centrifuge GNLW-554ET and a three phase centrifuge GNSX-554ET. And there is a chemical dosing unit together with the whole system and preheating and pre-mixing devices before the sludge comes into shale shaker and decanter centrifuge.

Equipment Used for Feeding and Discharging for Decanter Centrifuges

Decanter centrifuges are quite important and efficient equipment used for separation of liquid and solids only second to the shale shakers. By the high G force generated by the high speed rotating of centrifuge bowl, the liquid will be splashed and the solids phase is to be pushed out. For achieving a satisfactory separating result, we have to make sure there are suitable equipment for feeding the decanter centrifuge and some other facilities for discharge.
Decanter centrifuges request for stable feeding, so some pulse pumps are not suitable for feeding the centrifuges. The pump shall provide stable feeding capacities. And it would be better if the feeing volume can be adjusted as per the centrifuge speed.

Normally, based on rich experience as a decanter centrifuge manufacturer, GN Solids Control normally suggest those two pumps for centrifuge feeding as below:

1. Screw pump, which is a kind of Mono pump. Inside the screw pump there are one stator and one rotor and the comparative move between them provides stable feeding volume for the centrifuge. GN VFD centrifuges’ control panels can include a control panel for the centrifuge feeding pump.

2. Submersible slurry pump is also used for centrifuge feeding purpose, mostly for constant speed centrifuges, especially when the centrifuge is located on a tank and when the tank’s space is limited.

GN has both pump types available for matching different centrifuge models.

For centrifuge discharge, normally the liquid phase after separation will flow directly to its containers with a level difference. That’s why the centrifuge is requested to be mounted on a certain height, for example, on a tank or on a skid. The solids phase discharged by the centrifuge can flow directly via a chute or be carried out by a screw conveyor below the centrifuge.

1. Shale shakers. As a professional shale shaker manufacturer, GN also pays a great attention to the shaker screens, cause a shale shaker’s good performance is greatly affected by the shaker screens. And shaker screens with accurate API number can ensure a good separation and a high conductance is a must for reaching the requested treating capacity. GN shaker screens have the both features. Meanwhile, GN shaker screens have a long service life and reasonable prices.

2. Sludge vacuum pump. It is also called a solids pump, cause it can transfer large solids or even all dry solids like sand and mud. It can be used in various applications, such as oily sludge transferring, animal waste, industry slurry, sand and etc. It can suck from a long distance and discharge even longer. And, it is not driven by any electricity, instead, it is fully air driven, so it is suitable for all Explosive proof requests.

3. ViST vacuum shale shaker, which is used to reduce the drilling waste from the shale shaker. It is fixed onto the last piece of shale shaker, and it is suitable for WBM, OBM and SBM. It helps to reduce waste by 30%-50% and one set of ViST can serve for 1 to 3 sets of shale shakers.
