Separation Methods to be Used for Mining Beneficiation

The purpose of beneficiation is to separate the mining raw material into useful minerals and useless components.
In practice of mineral processing, some artificial methods are often used to enlarge differences in physical and chemical properties of minerals to help improve the separation efficiency. For example, to change the mineral magnetism by magnetizing roasting, to treat the surface of mineral is treated with acid and salt to selectively change the conductivity of some mineral, to change the natural wettability of minerals under help of various flotation reagents Besides above mentioned methords, the shape, particle size, hardness and color of minerals are also used as some special beneficiation standards.

Functions of each equipment: in fact, the solids control system are used for removing the drilling cuttings from the mud in a physical way, which means, each step of separation is based on the drilling cuttings’ particle sizes. The shale shakers are used to remove the most particles larger than 100 microns. Desander and desilter are working with centrifugal force generated by the cyclones’ structure, and their cuttings points are respectively 40 and 20 microns. The middle speed centrifuge are used for removal of particles from 5 to 7 microns, which here means barite recovery. And the high speed centrifuges are used for removing particles from 2 to 5 microns, extra fine ones.

1. Desander GNZJ752J-1S. The desander cones are located after the shale shaker, which is used to remove particles above 40 microns. For this desander, there is a drying shaker with 2 pieces of shaker screens and a screen size of 1.35 square meter. Normally for weighted mud there should be a desander or desilter with underflow shaker. Here it is a one desander model with a 10 inch diameter desander cone.

2. Desilter GNZJ752J-8N. This desilte is located after the desander. It is called desilter cause it is used to remove particles larger than 20 microns which are mostly sized as silt. Same as the desander, it has an underflow shaker, too. Both the desander and desilter are fed by centrifugal pumps.

3. Vacuum degasser GNZCQ270B. Vacuum degassers are located after the shale shaker while before the cyclones. GN Vacuum degasser has no need of a large power. Instead, it can be regarded as a large agitator. GN Solids Control has 2 models of vacuum degasser available and the GNZCQ270 is the smaller one. Besides the vacuum degasser, GN Solids Control also has centrifugal degasser available.

Double Deck Linear Motion Shale Shaker for Europe Client

The year 2022 now comes into the last month, and GN factory is still fully scheduled with new orders from all over the world. Recently, GN just finished the manufacturing for a batch of double deck shale shakers for oil and gas solids control for an European client.

GNZS706 double deck shale shaker has following features:

1. The shaker model is GNZS706, which means there are totally 6 pieces of shaker screens on the shaker. 3 pieces of screens are mounted on the upper deck, with a total screen area of 2.0 square meters and the lower deck also has 3 pieces of shaker screens with a total screen area of 2.6 square meters. Total screen area is 4.6 square meters.

2. Working principle of the double deck shaker: the upper deck of shaker is equipped with coarse screens as the 1st step separation and the lower deck we use comparably finer screens. In this way, the treating capacity is increased and the screen mesh is better protected for longer life.

3. GNZS706 double deck shaker has the quick pressing device for changing shaker screens easily and quickly. And such device is quite durable for performance. This function highly facilitates the operators when changing shaker screens.

4. GNLW706 double deck shaker uses 2 sets of vibrating motors which generate a linear motional high G force. It is suitable for both land rigs and offshore projects.

Each year, GN Solids Control makes and sells tens of solids pumps in different sizes. 1. The pump is fully air driven. Yes, exactly, cause the solids pumps are really designed as a vacuum cleaner, and it has another name, which is a vacuum pump. It is called a vacuum pump because it is driven by air and helped by an air compressor. The air compressor generated a gas force to the pump and the pump uses travel valves, delay valves and some other parts to suck and push the materials in and out by using the compressed air. Instead, a vacuum pump itself has no need for electricity.

2. Features of vacuum pumps. The air force is high, so the pump is quite powerful. For example, the largest vacuum pump is GNSP-40B among GN vacuum solids pumps and it can suck materials from 500 meters far and discharge to up to 1000 meters away. How to Choose a Suitable Solution for a Drilling Waste Management System

According to the environment protection laws and regulations in many countries, the drilling waste management system is mandatory for a drilling rig’s solids control system. A complete drilling waste management system includes 2 systems, one is to treat the drilling cuttings discharged by the solids control shale shakers, which is used for reduce the cuttings for a safe discharge, and also for recovery of the drilling fluids. The other is drilling fluids waste management, which is used to remove the extra particles in the drilling fluids after a long time recycling in a solids control system.

2022.08.15 Solids Control Centrifuge

1. Drilling cuttings waste management system. In a word, this system’s first mission is to minimize the cuttings to be discharged. Based on different mud type, the first separation equipment is different.

1.1. For oil based mud, which is used in most of drilling fields, a vertical cuttings dryer is more efficient. A vertical cuttings dryer is a high speed rotating machine which uses the centrifugal force to splash the liquid to through a mesh while the same mesh is used to block the cuttings. GNCD930 series vertical cuttings dryers can reduce the oil on cutting to below 5%.

1.2. For water based mud, a high G drying shaker is a better choice. It is similar as a shale shaker. And the main differences from a solids control shale shaker are: a high G shaker has a larger G force and the feeding of a high G shale shaker is like a hopper.

2. The second step for separation, for both the OBM cuttings and WBM cuttings is always a high speed decanter centrifuge, which is used to remove the finer solids particles in the liquid after the first equipment’s work. Unless a solids control centrifuge, this centrifuge for drilling waste management is always equipped by a VFD control panel, which is more flexible for variable mud condition.

1. Decanter centrifuge are always located as the 4th stage for solids control, after the desilter cones. Before the centrifuge, there are shale shakers, desander cones and desilter cones, each has a smaller cutting point than last stage. A middle speed decanter centrifuge is always used for recover the expensive barite in the drilling mud.

2. If there is a 5th stage for separation as in many high configuration solids control systems, it should be a high speed centrifuge, too. This centrifuge is used to separate out the cuttings from 2 to 5 microns in the drilling mud.

3. As in many countries in Africa, where there is a drilling rig, along with the solids control system, there should be a drilling cuttings waste management system containing s vertical cuttings dryer and a decanter centrifuge. The vertical cuttings dryer is used to remove the oil on cuttings and the high speed centrifuge is used to remove the small particles in the recovered mud from vertical cuttings dryer.

Two Sets HDD Mud Cleaning System for SINOPEC

HDD is a quite common way for pipeline works in cities or for pipelines across the rivers or so. This word is short for horizontal directional drilling. Just as other drilling, the drilling mud is to be used for HDD and the drilling mud should be well treated and prepared for reuse. A complete mud cleaning system for HDD always includes following steps for separation:

1. Shale shaker. In many mud cleaning systems or so called solids control systems, the shale shaker is always the first step for separation. It is used to remove most of particles and also the largest particles. In those 2 systems GN recently made for SINOPEC, the shale shakers are GNZS703F. This shaker model is quite popular in HDD projects and also used for oil and gas solids control systems. It has a screen area of 2.63 square meters provided by 3 pieces of shaker screens each sized 1250*700mm.
2. Mud cleaner. In fact, in an HDD mud cleaning system, there are always desander cones and desilter cones. Desander cones are of 10 inch diameter, which is used for removal of particles larger than 40 microns. And the desilter cones are of 4 inch diameter for removal of particles larger than 20 microns. A mud cleaner is a combination of desander cones and desilter cones, with a shared underflow shaker for drying.
3. A mud mixing hopper is a must for a HDD mud cleaning system, which is used for adding the loss components into the recycled drilling mud in order to prepare the drilling mud for the future drilling. A mud mixing hopper has a hopper and a centrifugal pump, the hopper can be located together with pump by the mud tank, or on tank top with the centrifugal pump on tank bottom.
4. A decanter centrifuge, which is not a must but quite efficient in high configuration systems. A middle speed centrifuge like GNLW452D is used to remove particles from 5 to 7 microns. And a high speed centrifuge is used to remove particles from 2 to 5 microns.
